N1

N1 is a community and long-term platform for exceptional young builders, researchers, and founders under 22. We identify people unusually early—often before they have a company, a polished project, or a clear path—and help them grow through real work, high-density peers, direct feedback, capital, and long-term trust.

Why N1 Exists

Over the past decade, I have reviewed more than 200,000 startup applications and worked with thousands of founders at the earliest stages. One pattern kept appearing: many of the people who later build important companies or technologies show unusual signals long before the market notices them.

They start earlier. They teach themselves difficult things. They build without permission. They are often more curious, ambitious, independent, and restless than the environments around them know how to handle.

Most do not lack intelligence or information—they lack the right environment at the moment when they are most open to change. Between the ages of 14 and 22, a person is still highly plastic: their standards, ambition, judgment, and sense of what is possible can change quickly. But these are also the years when many exceptional young people are slowly pulled toward safer paths, standardized credentials, and work that never fully uses them.

N1 exists to intervene earlier.

What N1 Is

N1 is not a traditional school, accelerator, or youth program. There are no fixed classes, standard curricula, or artificial exercises. Members work on real companies, research, products, and technical problems—they meet users, build prototypes, recruit collaborators, make difficult decisions, fail, and try again.

The environment is designed around a simple idea: people grow faster when they are surrounded by strong peers, meaningful problems, high standards, and honest feedback. Members live and work together for extended periods; they share meals, build late into the night, review one another’s work, and form relationships that may last for decades.

The goal is not to make people busier. It is to help them think more clearly, build more seriously, and discover what they may be capable of becoming.

Who We Look For

N1 is primarily for people between 14 and 22 who have already started moving beyond the standard path. Some are founders; some are researchers; some are engineers, artists, or independent builders. What connects them is not a title, school, or résumé.

We look for people who:

  • Start building before anyone asks them to

  • Learn unusually fast from reality

  • Think independently rather than repeat accepted answers

  • Stay with difficult problems longer than their peers

  • Can turn curiosity into products, experiments, or original work

  • Are willing to take responsibility for what they create

  • Have the ambition to build something that may matter at global scale

Many members are still rough. They may lack polish, experience, or clear direction, and some have been underestimated for years. What matters is not how complete they already look, but how quickly they are growing and how far their trajectory may go.

N1 remains deliberately small, with an acceptance rate around 0.1 percent.

How It Works

Members begin with real problems, not courses. They are expected to make something, place it in front of users, observe what happens, and update their judgment. Progress is measured through behavior: products built, experiments completed, users retained, revenue earned, technical problems solved, and difficult decisions made.

N1 supports this process with:

  • A high-density residential and working environment

  • Peers across AI, robotics, advanced manufacturing, science, and software

  • Founder and researcher Office Hours

  • Capital for early experiments and companies

  • Compute, laboratories, prototyping tools, and technical infrastructure

  • Long-term support through major decisions, failures, and transitions

The most important part is not any single resource. It is the loop created by all of them together: build, receive feedback, change, and build again.

The Community

N1 currently includes around 40 members. More than half work in artificial intelligence, with interests spanning model architecture, agents, memory, world models, model efficiency, robotics, embodied intelligence, developer infrastructure, and future computing systems.

Some members have already worked with or joined leading AI teams including Moonshot AI, DeepSeek, ByteDance Seed, MiniMax, Tencent Hunyuan, and Zhipu AI. Others are building companies in developer tools, hardware, robotics, consumer products, legal technology, and AI infrastructure.

What matters most is not the list of institutions or projects—it is the density of people who are serious about creating something new. A member should be able to look across the room and find someone who raises their standards, challenges their assumptions, or becomes a collaborator for the next ten years.

What We Are Trying to Develop

N1 is not only trying to produce successful startups. We want members to become people capable of defining important problems, building original solutions, organizing talented teams, and carrying responsibility over long periods of time.

  • It requires judgment. The ability to distinguish what is important from what is merely impressive.

  • It requires agency. The habit of acting before permission, certainty, or consensus arrives.

  • It requires endurance. The willingness to continue after attention disappears and the work becomes difficult.

  • It also requires values. Technology amplifies both a person’s strengths and flaws. The more capable someone becomes, the more important it is that they learn to act with honesty, restraint, responsibility, and care for others.

These qualities cannot be taught through slogans. They are formed through real decisions with real consequences.

Early Results

N1 is still early, but the first signal is clear: the right environment can change a young person’s trajectory very quickly.

Members have moved from small experiments into frontier AI teams, published research recognized by leading researchers, built products used by thousands of people, and started companies across AI, robotics, developer tools, games, and hardware.

More important than any single paper, product, or internship is the shift underneath: from exploring widely to choosing a real problem, from waiting for opportunities to creating them, and from being a promising student to becoming a serious builder.

N1’s early results reinforce a simple belief: when exceptional young people are placed in a dense, demanding, and real environment, years of growth can happen in months.

The Long-Term Vision

Over the next thirty years, N1 hopes to find and support one hundred young people who go on to change the world. Some may build companies worth tens or hundreds of billions of dollars; some may advance science, create new technologies, reshape culture, or build institutions that outlast them.

N1 may begin with entrepreneurship because building a company creates one of the fastest feedback loops between an idea and reality, but its long-term purpose is larger. We want to become a home for young people who intend to do consequential work, regardless of whether their path leads through technology, science, business, art, or public life.

The ambition is to build a place where future founders and creators meet before the world recognizes them—where they find peers, develop judgment, build their first serious work, and form the trust networks that shape the next generation.

Most institutions arrive after the signal is obvious. N1 wants to be there earlier.
